While jump starting your vehicle isn’t a situation you’d like to ever find yourself in, knowing how to properly do so will be important to the safety of both vehicles as well as all people nearby. Team Welsh Jeep Chrysler is here to show you the right way to jump start your vehicle so you can get on the road safely.
Start by parking both vehicles near each other, with approximately 18 inches of working space to walk between the vehicles. Ensure that both vehicles are switched off, and turn off any lights, climate control systems, and any other power drawing devices or features to ensure the most efficient flow of electricity from one vehicle to the other. Next, find the jumper cables you’ll be using ,and lay them out so that each end has a red and black clamp. Now, attach the red cable to the red terminal on the dead battery, followed by the red cable on the battery you’ll be using to jump. Next, attach the black cable to the black terminal of the good battery, and finally, attach the black cable to a metal point under the hood. It is important to never attach this cable to the black terminal of the dead battery, as it may create a spark that can ignite any fumes that might be in the air. Now that you’re all hooked up, start the vehicle with the good battery and wait one to two minutes. Now you’re ready to start the vehicle with the dead battery. If the vehicle starts, carefully disconnect the jumper cables, ensuring that the ends never touch until all four points are completely disconnected.
