With fall in full swing, winter can't be that far behind. And you know what that means? Snow, ice, and freezing temperatures will be here before you know it. While there are many ways you can prepare for the winter months, don't forget to winterize your car, truck, SUV, or van too!
What Can You do to Prepare Your Car for Winter?
While you should always make sure your vehicle is well maintained and repaired, there are a few winter-specific maintenance items that should be done before winter arrives. Here are a few that our service center recommends.
- Battery Check - Car batteries can be finicky, especially when the weather gets below freezing. Before cold weather comes, have your battery checked for a low charge. Don't wait until your car won't start and you need a jump to be on your way.
- Tire Pressure Check - The air pressure in your tires is another item the cold weather can cause problems with. Make sure they aren't deflated, as low tire pressure can cause less gas mileage and more tire wear. It also lessens your control.
- Winter Tire Changes - With the amount of snow we receive in New Jersey, you may or may not want to install winter tires on your vehicle. Winter tires are designed for winter, with deeper tread for excess snow, more flexible rubber for cold temperatures, and more traction for icy conditions.
- Windshield Service - Seeing out of your windshield can become difficult if you don't prepare your windshield and its items for winter. Inspect your windshield for cracks and repair or replace the windshield as needed. You can also install winter wipers designed to handle ice and snow and use winter windshield washer fluid.
