The Jeep® Wrangler is what many drivers consider to be the quintessential off-road adventuring partner. Its rugged looks and legendary 4x4 capability make it a force to be reckoned with when you unleash it on your favorite trails, but how can you make the most of your Wrangler model's prowess? Engaging its four-wheel drive (4WD) system is the key to unleashing its full potential. We'll go over how to do this with your Wrangler model.
Do all Jeep® Wrangler models have 4WD?
No. Many do, but some are equipped with a two-wheel drive system. The first step is to determine whether your Wrangler is equipped with 4WD. There's a good chance that it is.
Engaging 4WD
If you find yourself transitioning from the road to a wild trail, you'll likely want to take full advantage of its 4WD capabilities.
First, stop to change gears. Move the gear shift selector to Neutral and keep your foot on the brake. Then, choose which gear you want. Here is a brief overview of what the various gears are for:
- 2 Hi or 2H: Recommended for everyday driving on dry surfaces.
- 4 Hi or 4H: Recommended for normal driving that needs a boost for added traction on dirt roads or snowy surfaces during winter around Far Hills, NJ and Morristown, NJ.
- 4 Lo or 4L: Recommended for maximum traction at low speeds. This gear is ideal for crawling over rocks and through mud as well as on major inclines.
Once you've decided on the best gear for your current situation, move your shift selector to that gear and shift back to Drive to keep driving in the new gear.
